  • by Claire

Our guest on the podcast this week is Professor Selena Bartlett, an Australian neuroscientist who’s life’s work is all about understanding how our brains work.

Selena has held senior roles with leading research institutes in the US and Australia and she’s currently leading pioneering research into addiction and obesity at the Queensland University of Technology.

What drew us to Selena’s story is not only her passion to understand how our brains work but also her mission to educate us non-neuroscientists about the things we can do to improve our brain’s health and even completely change our lives.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • The very personal reason Selena switched her career path away from pharmacy towards neuroscience as a young woman
  • Selena’s fascinating explanation of what causes mental illnesses such as schizophrenia
  • How she overcame her sugar addiction when she realised the impact it has on the brain
  • Some radically simple things we can all do to improve our brain’s health; and

Dr Jacinta Jiménez – Fixing Burnout

  • March 16, 2021
  • by Claire

We’re excited to bring you this week’s important conversation with psychologist, burnout expert, author and leadership coach, Dr Jacinta Jiménez.

We’ve actually known Jacinta for some years and followed her great work on leadership, coaching and high performance with keen interest. We were really excited when she told us about her new book, The Burnout Fix.

Jacinta had broken new ground with this book deconstructing and presenting burnout in an actionable way we’d never seen before, and all of it is science backed.

Jacinta studied and obtained her doctorate in Psychology from Stanford University where she focused on peak performance, motivation and behaviour change.

What makes her so interesting to speak to and learn from is that she has also more recently spent several years in the tech startup world helping to build a coaching-at-scale business called BetterUp, in San Francisco.

In this episode and in her new book, Jacinta deconstructs burnout and you’ll hear how:

  • Her own 2 burnout experiences changed and shaped her career
  • The telltale signs of burnout may not be what you think they are
  • How the focus of her work has been influenced by being one of the few Latina women in her field;  and
  • You’ll learn about a model you can use to help prevent burnout happening to you.

So without further ado enjoy this episode with the passionate and learned Dr Jacinta Jiménez …

Future Proof Me – How to Get the Career…

  • January 26, 2021
  • by Claire

We’re excited to share our first mini episode for 2021!

It’s a topical one for many people, particularly those whose careers may have been affected in some way by COVID in the past year.

We were blown away by the career story of Dr Emma Camp, a coral scientist, a UN Young Leader and a National Geographic Explorer, amongst numerous other accolades she’s earnt along the way.

When you look at Emma’s LinkedIn profile now you would think she’s always been seen as a superstar but in fact, this is far from the truth.

At the very beginning of her career, Emma really struggled to get her foot in the door of any kind of scientific research and she had to get both creative and very resilient to continue her dream of becoming a marine scientist.

Don’t miss her story of the incredibly creative way she got her foot in the door and hear her advice on going after what you really want in your career.

Enjoy this mini episode …

Dr Emma Camp – On a Quest to Save…

  • March 12, 2019
  • by admin

This week’s inspiring guest is Dr Emma Camp, a British marine bio-geochemist who searches out and then studies corals that can naturally survive in extreme conditions such as mangroves. This might sound simple but it leads to Emma listing crocodiles as one of the greatest risks of a day in the office!

She’s passionate about saving the world’s coral reefs and has made it her mission that we all should be too. (Emma, we’re convinced!)

Emma is a National Geographic Explorer and a current United Nations Young leader. Despite her relative youth, her pioneering research work and passion for saving corals has seen her receive numerous honours and highly-prized research fellowships.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • How Emma used her determination and ingenuity to go from struggling to break into academia to starting her own company to get the research experience she needed
  • How her Dad’s mantra helps her reach her goals
  • What it felt like the first time she found herself at the UN General Assembly
  • And, the real story about the state of the world’s coral reefs and what you can do to make a difference,

Enjoy this episode with the passionate and determined Dr Emma Camp.
