Mikaela Jade – Pioneering for First Nations

  • October 5, 2021October 5, 2021
  • by Claire

We have a treat in store for you today with a guest whom we reckon is one of the best storytellers we’ve had on the show.

Australian entrepreneur, Mikaela Jade, otherwise known as Mik, is the Founder and CEO of Indigital, a company developing innovative new ways to digitise and translate knowledge, culture and stories from remote and ancient First Nations communities.

Mik, a proud Cabrogal woman, is a UN Permanent Forum Indigenous Issues delegate; she’s a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Augmented and Virtual Reality; and she’s also been recognised as a Top 100 Innovator in Australia.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How Mik reacted when, as a young adult, she learnt she had indigenous ancestors
  • How she came up with the idea of using augmented reality to share cultural stories in the national parks where she worked
  • How hard it was to get people to help her progress her augmented reality ideas
  • What happened when Mik reached rock bottom, and
  • The one technology Mik thinks we all need to read up on.

We think you’ll LOVE this conversation with the ever-so resilient and compelling storyteller, Mik Jade.

Enjoy!

Future Proof Me – The Value of Dreaming Big

  • February 9, 2021February 9, 2021
  • by Claire

This week’s mini ‘Future Proof Me’ episode is all about the power of dreaming big. One person who’s a passionate believer in the power of the dreams we make for ourselves is stationery and Swedish design entrepreneur, Kristina Karlsson – the founder of kikki.K.

We had Kristina on the show around the time her business went into voluntary administration last year. It was a perfect storm and COVID was the last straw.

However, the great news is that in August last year they found an investor and the brand and business lives on, still with Kristina and her husband Paul continuing to run the business.

Kristina makes a big distinction between goal setting and dreaming. Goal setting is a rational process where you take reality into account, while dreaming, she says, is where you let go of reality and really think about what you would most love to happen – to create your dream life.

We also love how Kristina stresses you don’t have to be special to achieve great things….

Win One of Kristina’s ‘Your Dream Life’ books

We’re thrilled to say we have three copies of Kristina’s book ‘Your Dream Life Starts Here’ to give away to listeners keen to follow the seven steps Kristina mentions in this mini episode.

Simply email us at hello@dontstopusnow.co and tell us in less than 50 words why it’s important to you to be able to think and dream bigger.

Entries close COB Wednesday, 24 February 2021. Winners will be notified by email.

Dr Cath Ball – Flying High with Drones and…

  • September 24, 2019September 24, 2019

In this week’s episode we meet an entrepreneur and innovator who’s been through more than her fair share of challenge and trauma, yet has found a way to forge her own unique path. We’re talking about the irrepressible Dr Catherine Ball.

Catherine, or Cath, grew up in a pretty poor, single parent household in an industrial town in the UK. Unlike her peers she was determined to go to university where she studied environmental protection. She then went on to complete a PHD – a process she now describes as torturous.

Needing to pay off her student debt, her path then took her into the corporate world where she worked with a number of engineering consultancies in the UK and then in Australia.

Just as Cath was being recognised as a leader in her space receiving the Queensland Telstra Business Woman of the Year award in 2015, her company merged with a competitor and she, to her surprise, was made redundant.

It was this shocking jolt that led her to start her first company and led to her building on her already existing experience working with drones.

Since then she’s be recognised as a true thought leader in emerging technologies, having been awarded many accolades in Australia, including then AFR Women of Influence and Top 25 Women in Robotics Lists, both in 2016.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How she’s carved out her unique path as an entrepreneur;
  • How she manages her time involved with 10 different projects plus having a young toddler and another one on the way;
  • How drones will change our lives and
  • How you need to think about your career in a world of AI, robotics and cybersecurity.

Enjoy this episode with the witty and inspiring Dr Cath Ball.

Dr Fiona Wood – The Inspiring Optimist

  • November 6, 2018
  • by admin

Our guest today is Dr Fiona Wood, a world-leading burns specialist and innovative surgeon and researcher. She’s a former Australian of the Year for her pioneering burns research and treatments.

Incredibly, she was also voted Australia’s most-trusted-person for six successive years.

Fiona and her groundbreaking ‘Spray-on-skin’ burns treatment came into the public eye in 2002 when 28 victims of the Bali bombings were flown to Perth in Western Australia to receive life-saving burns treatment under her supervision. (Spray on skin greatly reduces permanent scarring.)

Fiona has successfully commercialised “Spray on skin” treatment worldwide and all royalties from this business are used to fund further research into burns treatment through her Foundation.

In this episode hear Fiona talk about:

  • Her absolute passion for what she does and the responsibility she feels every day in the operating theatre
  • How she copes and consciously fosters resilience having seen so much suffering first-hand
  • How she approached commercialising ‘spray-on skin’ without having any commercial experience;
  • And her memories of the remarkable experience of being Australian of the Year

If you’re anything like us after listening to this conversation you’ll feel like you want to take Fiona out for a coffee, give her a hug and high five her all at the same time!

Enjoy!
