How To Negotiate Your Pay

  • October 9, 2018October 10, 2018
  • by admin

Few of us enjoy the prospect of having to negotiate on behalf of ourselves. We typically find it much easier if we’re negotiating a business matter or something on behalf of others. When the time comes for us to speak up for ourselves it can feel a whole lot more confronting.

Add to that the fact that money and salary amounts are often taboo subjects, it’s no wonder many of us sell ourselves short at the negotiating table. And it’s not surprising that a number of you have been in touch asking us to cover this topic as well. (Thanks for your emails ☺).

So here at Don’t Stop us Now! we thought, what better subject for our next How To episode?

We think you’ll get lots of great inspiration from this episode to help ensure you do yourself justice in future.

In this super practical episode you’ll learn:

  • Reasons why we have the gender pay gap
  • How being underpaid early in her career taught Greta a lesson she never forgot
  • Why you shouldn’t think of negotiating a pay rise as a one-off conversation
  • Tried and tested advice for preparing yourself for a money conversation including a Chatbot set up specifically to advise women on negotiating their pay
  • Plus a whole host of practical and data-backed tips, tools and even phrases from us and some of our CEO guests to help you in your next negotiation conversation.

Even if you’re happy with your current situation, don’t miss this episode because we’re sure you’ll learn something new that will help you in future or be of service to your friends or family.

The better we all are at negotiating, the more we can collectively contribute to closing the gender pay gap that exists around the world.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and stories too, just email us.

Enjoy this episode!

Cindy Gallop – Blowing Shit Up!

  • September 25, 2018
  • by admin

This week’s guest describes herself as someone who likes to blow shit up. They are her words not ours.  Cindy Gallop is a globe-trotting consultant, speaker and entrepreneur who was a former North American head of the famed advertising agency, Bartle Bogle & Hegarty (BBH).

As you’ll hear in this conversation, Cindy is a strong, edgy character with clear views about many topics including diversity and sex, to name just two. She’s not one of those people who just say things, she’s out there trying to change the world! And it hasn’t been easy.

Around 13 years ago, she decided it was time to leave advertising and do her own thing…

Her mission for the past nine years is to make it easier for everybody in the world to talk about normal sex vs pornography through her start up MakeLoveNotPorn. You’ll hear about how her now infamous TED talk led her to embark on this journey which would prove to be filled with unexpected challenges.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How Cindy’s life and career have always been a complete accident.
  • How asking about where her career was going led to her dream job starting and running the BBH US business
  • How her own experience of dating men in their 20’s led to MakeLoveNotPorn
  • Her powerful thoughts on why you should shamelessly self promote
  • Why she’d tell her younger self to “don’t give a damn about what other people think” and;
  • How she’s been turned into a chatbot that you can’t afford to ignore.

You really don’t want to miss this episode with the very unique Cindy Gallop!

Aya Aso – The Savvy, Luxury Entrepreneur

  • September 11, 2018December 5, 2018
  • by admin

Our guest this week is Japanese luxury hotel and hospitality entrepreneur, Aya Aso.

Until last year, Aya ran the hotel chain she founded a decade ago, the Agora Hotel Group, a multi award-winning chain of resort and luxury hotels in Japan.

Aya spent most of her childhood living in Brazil and in her 20’s studied to become a concert pianist in Los Angeles. However, that idea was put on the back burner when a part time job at the Sheraton led to the discovery that she loved the hospitality industry.

This set Aya on her career journey and led her back to Japan where she ultimately started her business.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

  • How growing up in Brazil has impacted her as a business woman
  • How one of the most influential entrepreneurs in Japan took her under his wing and helped her learn the most important thing about running a company
  • What it was like to be a woman starting a business in Japan
  • How she lost most of her business after an earthquake devastated the travel industry in 2011 and
  • What it felt like to build the company back up to 1,000 staff only to reach a point where she felt she had no other option but to walk away

We can’t wait to see her next business, the SAVVY Collective, a Luxury Hotel Concept Consulting business, go from strength to strength.

Margarita Herdocia – The Compassionate Capitalist

  • August 27, 2018December 5, 2018
  • by admin

We have a truly international businesswoman and global citizen on the show today.

Margarita Herdocia, is Nicaraguan by birth, was educated in New York, and lives in Costa Rica. She owns and runs Renaissance Holdings which operates multiple businesses based in Central America, the Caribbean, Russia and Europe.

Incredibly, she’s using her businesses to further the cause of democracy in her dictator-run country of birth where she finds herself having to make decisions in the current civil unrest that have life or death implications for her staff.

Margarita began – with no experience – by taking over a failing, family owned fast food and casual dining business and totally blitzed it. She’s expanded her portfolio over the years to also include real estate development, some retail, and financial asset management interests as well.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • How a comment in her living room saw her go overnight from no experience in business, to turning around a failing business in Nicaragua
  • Her philosophy as a leader, and how her purpose is to create what she calls ‘happy jobs’
  • How she takes advantage of the times when men in meetings won’t look at her – she’s often the only woman in the room
  • Her advice for women who want to negotiate a pay rise

Enjoy this episode!

  • by admin

Our guest today is the extraordinary Heidi Hackemer who is VP of Engagement at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative…that’s the billion dollar philanthropic foundation founded by Pediatrician and Education advocate Priscilla Chan and, her husband, Facebook’s co founder, Mark Zuckerberg.

We first heard about Heidi as a leading creative thinker and someone who had founded a unique and highly regarded brand strategy agency in New York.  But then we realised how that was just the tip of the iceberg.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • Why she walked away from her prestigious role in advertising to drop out and drive around America on her own for two years.
  • How differently she thought about her career when she was in her 20’s vs her 30s.
  • How she built a business from the ground up to optimise creativity
  • And her passionate reaction to the stereotypes women are expected to subscribe to, especially the assumption that every woman must want to be a mother. You’ll hear how Heidi has dealt with this big life question.

We really loved this conversation and know you will too.

So please enjoy this episode with the gutsy, creative and refreshingly frank Heidi Hackemer.

We’re super excited to share this conversation with Lindley Edwards with you.

Lindley started her career working for one of Australia’s most renowned investment banks, Macquarie Bank, and then found a love of Asia when she took on a VP role with Citibank.

Today, Lindley runs a corporate advisory business called AFG Venture Group which specialises in cross-border investments and transactions, particularly between Asia & Australia. She’s also Chairperson for two startups and a Non-Executive Director of a Think Tank called AsiaLink.

  • How she thinks – or doesn’t think – about planning her career

Siew Hoon Yeoh – Is Making Travel Better

  • June 27, 2018February 26, 2019
  • by admin

Our guest this week is Singapore-based, travel entrepreneur Siew Hoon Yeoh.

Siew Hoon is one of the humblest people you’ll meet. She refutes the idea that she’s an innovator and a pioneer in her space. But ask anyone in the travel industry in Asia “who is the most innovative woman you know?” and Siew Hoon Yeoh is nearly always the answer.

Siew Hoon’s company Web in Travel (or WIT as you’ll hear her say in the interview) is a content and events company focused on online travel. Those in the know say Siew Hoon’s efforts to bring digital front and centre have been instrumental in helping the travel industry, particularly in Asia Pacific, move more quickly in the face of disruption. She sold WIT for an undisclosed sum four years ago but continues to run the business she loves.

In this episode you’ll hear Siew Hoon talk about:

– How her childhood as the daughter of a refugee in Penang, Malaysia shaped her views about the importance of community
– Why it’s a golden time for innovation in Asia right now
– How she thinks about building something new and innovative and;
– Why it’s so important to accept who you are and play to your strengths.

Sherilyn Shackell – Has Found Her Purpose!

  • June 19, 2018July 20, 2018
  • by admin

This week’s guest is the uplifting Sherilyn Shackell.

Sherilyn spent the first part of her career, by accident she says, as a formidable headhunter in the UK. She borrowed millions to buy the company she worked for in her mid 30’s and grew the business to be hugely successful. As successful as it was she felt like she was on a treadmill …earning more money to spend more money. Her physical and emotional health suffered.

A near death experience in her early forties led Sherilyn on a journey to find her purpose.

Sherilyn is now the Founder & CEO of the Marketing Academy, an international not for profit organisation dedicated to inspiring and developing talented stars in the Marketing, Media & Communication industries to become the leaders and influencers of tomorrow. She says these sectors have unique power to shape our collective opinions as a society.

In this episode you’ll hear Sherilyn talk about:

– How she liberates her decision making with the question “what’s the worst thing that can happen?”
– How she has gone about finding her purpose
– Why spending time with the people who will come to your funeral is crucial
– And, how she lost 21kg in 2017 and used blogging to keep herself accountable

Sit back and listen to the human dynamo, Sherilyn Shackell!
